A teenager's dream to save the world's coral reefs through citizen science

Bubbles float 40 feet to the ocean's surface. Flapping fins propel through the water. Flashes of light illuminate coral reefs. Underwater, exploring these reefs, is where Dylan Vecchione feels most at home.


He's not a marine biologist. He's not a professional SCUBA diver. He's an inquisitive 16-year-old who's standing up for dying coral reefs off the coast of Hawaii.


In some ways, Dylan is your everyday teenager. He wears braces, likes spending time at the nearby beach, and is trying to figure out what he wants to be when he grows up (he enjoys both astrophysics and oceanography). But the Wildwood School sophomore’s extracurricular activities are a bit, well, unique. He has a TED Talk under his belt, takes politicians and activists on snorkel tours in Hawaii, and is working with the Coral Reef Alliance to get his imagery used as evidence for ocean preservation legislation.
