The people moving to Detroit are trying to change it. They say it's for the better.

DETROIT, Michigan — Many Detroiters are still leaving. Casey Rocheteau just moved in


She is the first recipient of a free, refurbished home from Write a House, a nonprofit that is salvaging abandoned homes and turning them over to writers, in hopes of bolstering the city’s literary arts scene. Casey is a poet.


The requirements are vague. The hope is that by simply being in Detroit, they’ll be inspired to write literature about the city and embrace its communities.


The program, first conceived in 2011, finished renovations on its first house in 2014. About 500 novelists, poets and journalists applied to occupy the house, each willing to relocate to Detroit (with a small percentage already residing there), stay for at least two years, pay modest monthly fees to cover taxes — and most importantly, participate in the literary community of Detroit.
